Currently, there are Waterkeeper
organizations in the Czech Republic, England,
and Russia. The seven Russian Waterkeeper
organizations are in the early stages of
development. European Waterkeepers all
are working to develop their organizations to
be a sustainable force for clean water and
strong communities in their countries.

Main Threats
Europe’s Waterkeeper organizations face threats to their waterways that are as unique as each European country. These issues range from the massive industrial contamination in Russia, a legacy of the rapid pace of the Soviet Union’s industrialization, to privatization of water resources, to restoring and monitoring important tributaries outside of Prague and elsewhere.
Currently, there are seven Waterkeeper organizations in the early stages of development in Russia, with Vyatka Riverkeeper as the first Waterkeeper in Russia.
