Pure Farms, Pure Waters: Perdue Case Update
Perdue Case Update:
Waterkeeper Alliance, together with our local Assateague Coastkeeper, brought this important Clean Water Act lawsuit against the industrial poultry conglomerate, Perdue, to: support our local Assateague Coastkeeper in her fight to protect her community’s right to clean water; help fight for family farmers against the corporate agriculture machine which has been routinely putting family farmers out of business, and force this industrial giant to clean up their poultry waste that is polluting local waterways. We prevailed on Perdue’s motions to dismiss and their motion for
summary judgment and the case went to mediation. Waterkeeper Alliance is disappointed that the parties were unable to resolve this case in mediation. We remain open to negotiating a settlement that ends the pollution at this poultry operation and improves poultry managementpractices at CAFOs in an effort to protect the Chesapeake Bay from polluted runoff. If unable to settle, we are confident that we will prevail at trial.

These Waterkeepers fight the good fight against corporate polluters like Perdue. When the Assateague Coastkeeper needed help responding to reports of polluted runoff coming from a Perdue factory farm operation in their watershed, we helped the Coastkeeper take action. Perdue and a handful of industrial poultry conglomerates are getting away with polluting waterways in the region with nearly a billion pounds of chicken waste a year. Its time for them to take responsibility for their actions and clean up their mess.
