Black Warrior Riverkeeper's mission is to protect and restore the Black Warrior River and its tributaries. The organization uses a watershed approach to ensure clean water, a healthy aquatic environment, and the recreational and aesthetic values of the river.
Recent Accomplishments
--Convinced the city of Birmingham to pass a resolution imploring the University of Alabama System to neither sell or lease their significant land and mineral holdings to allow coal mining at Shepherd Bend, as a drinking water intake facility serving 200,000 Birmingham-area customers operates directly across the river from this proposed mining site.--Through advocacy, prompted American Rivers to include the river on its 2011 list of America's Most Endangered Rivers. This list will help increase local and national attention to coal mining's threat to the beautiful and diverse Black Warrior River.
--Riverkeeper Nelson Brooke won the 2010 River Hero Award at the Alabama Rivers Alliance's Watershed Leadership Conference.
--Won ruling in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals upholding citizen suit enforcement provisions of the Clean Water Act.
