THE COALITION FOR BUZZARDS BAY, INC.- VICE-PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT
Position Description:
The Vice-President of
Development will be responsible for the
development and implementation of all aspects
of nonprofit fundraising in support of The
Coalition for Buzzards Bay’s annual operating
budget and Capital Campaign including major and
planned gifts, annual fund, membership
acquisition and retention, special events,
foundation relations, and volunteer
engagement.
The full-time position
reports directly to the President, is a member
of CBB’s senior management team, and serves as
liaison to the Development Committee of the
Board of Directors. The ideal candidate will
have more than 8 years of development
experience, a proven track record of success in
nonprofits of equal or greater size than CBB,
excellent interpersonal and communication
skills; and a passion for the environment and
Buzzards
Bay.
- Oversee all aspects of
the Coalition’s fundraising program: major
donors; membership; annual fund; capital
funding; foundation and corporate giving;
prospect research, and planned
giving.
- In accordance with the
Coalition’s Strategic Plan, meet near-term
fundraising goals, increase the level of
financial support for the Coalition, and
broaden its base of
support.
- Meeting the ambitious
goals of the Plan will require creative ideas
and hard
work.
- Coordinate the
‘Campaign for Buzzards Bay’ by supporting the
President, Co-Chairs and Cabinet members in all
aspects of campaign fundraising including
strategy, collateral, prospect research, donor
cultivation and solicitation, and
events.
- Assume direct
responsibility for the cultivation and
solicitation of some major donors and
prospects.
- Design and manage CBB’s
planned giving program [including a portfolio
of charitable gift annuities, charitable
remainder trusts, and bequests, as well as a
special society for planned gift
donors.
- Serve on the
Coalition’s senior management team, working
with other Vice-Presidents to set funding needs
and priorities [other departments include
Watershed Protection; Advocacy; Education; and,
Finance &
Administration]
- Serve as staff and
primary contact to the Development Committee of
the Coalition’sBoard of Directors, which helps
set broad fundraising strategy and facilitates
board involvement in cultivation and
solicitation.
- Manage a staff,
currently of 4 individuals, by providing proper
workplans and supervision, ensuring training,
and evaluating progress. Foster an environment
that rewards performance, builds confidence,
and encourages interaction and teamwork;
recognize and celebrate current achievements
and set clear expectations for future
success.
- Research potential
sources of foundation and government grants.
Write and prepareproposals. Develop and
maintain communication with
foundations.
- Plan and organize the
Coalition’s signature outdoor fundraising
events – Swim
Buzzards
- Bay and the Watershed
Ride - and coordination of other special donor
events.
- As a spokesperson for
the Coalition, formulate an understanding for
current programs, and be able to clearly
articulate a compelling case for support of the
Coalition to a variety of audiences,
particularly major
prospects.
- Management of all donor
tracking systems including Blackbaud Raiser’s
Edge and NetCommunity
software.
- Commitment to the
mission and growth aspirations of The Coalition
for Buzzards Bay and a passion for the
environment and Buzzards
Bay.
- Proven performance in
nonprofit fundraising management with at least
8 years of progressively responsible experience
and achievement focused on the acquisition and
stewardship of all levels of supporters from
$10 members to seven-figure donors and
foundations.
- An entrepreneurial
approach to building and guiding a development
program and the ability to reach out to the
community to promote the mission of
CBB.
- A supportive and
accessible management style, the ability to
lead and motivate staff and to encourage growth
in both people and programs, and a commitment
to ongoing professional
development.
- Superior communication
skills, with the ability to summarize
information and connect with a variety of
audiences; clarity and persuasiveness in
written and oral communications; and a high
comfort level with current electronic
media.
- Knowledge of
nonprofit financial budgeting and
planning.
- The warmth, personal
integrity and leadership qualities that will
promote energy and enthusiasm within CBB, and a
demonstrated ability to work easily and
effectively with a wide range of people,
including corporate executives, private
philanthropists, foundation leaders, and
volunteers.
- Willingness to work
differing hours and occasionally on weekends
and
evenings.
- Bachelor’s degree,
masters preferred; environmental background
helpful.
- Working knowledge of
the Blackbaud’s Raisers Edge and NetCommunity
software programs and their capabilities would
be extremely
helpful.
