Galena, IL - David Kirby will be speaking about his latest book Animal Factory, The Looming Threat of Industrial Pig, Dairy, and Poultry Farms to Humans and the Environment, at the Galena Convention Center, 900 Galena Square Dr. (near Stoneycreek Inn just off of Rt.20) on May 27, 2010 at 6:30 p.m.

This book is endorsed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who runs the Waterkeeper Alliance, and was featured on Meet the Press, Larry King Live and the Today Show. Kirby is the New York Times Bestselling author of Evidence of Harm. Four of the farmers interviewed in the book have been guest speakers at other HOMES events.

Joining Kirby is Art Norris, Quad Cities Waterkeeper, who will talk about his efforts to halt the construction of the proposed Triumph Foods hog processing plant. This massive facility is slated to be built in a sensitive wetlands area on the banks of the Rock River. With a capacity to process four millions hogs per year it will result in a huge influx of enormous factory-style hog facilities within a 100 mile radius, displacing dozens of family farmers, and destroying rural communities all over Illinois and Iowa.

In Animal Factory, Kirby reveals how massive animal farms - Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, or CAFOs - have brought us to the brink of a major environmental and public health disaster.  Backed by powerful and wealthy corporations with political muscle, these CAFOs churn out cheap food by passing many of their costs on to the farmers that raise their animals, the environment, and taxpayers. Visit www.animalfactorybook.com for more information.

HOMES will have copies of Animal Factory available for sale at the talk, which David Kirby will be happy to autograph.

HOMES will be drawing the winning ticket for their annual 50/50 raffle immediately after the presentations. Last year's winner received over $2,000, so purchase your tickets now!
