Tell EPA That Coal Ash Waste from Power Plants Is Not the Same as Household Garbage!

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

Coal ash waste produced by coal-burning power plants across the U.S. is a threat to your health. Exposure can cause cancer, gastrointestinal illnesses, reproductive problems, birth defects and a host of other problems. These effects are caused by harmful substances contained in the ash, like mercury, arsenic, chromium, cadmium, lead, selenium, uranium, and thorium. Right now, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is considering a set of rules that would allow coal ash producers to dispose of this hazardous waste the same way you get rid of your household trash. We don’t think this is the right way to go. Do you? Watch this video to learn more about our nation’s coal ash problem.

If, like the Waterkeepers in this video, you think coal ash should be treated as hazardous waste, now is your time to act. Send your thoughts and comments on the proposed coal ash regulations directly to those with decision-making authority at EPA. Waterkeeper Alliance’s Take Action tool makes sending your letter quick and easy. Just click the link below.
