Job Announcement- DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
Puget Soundkeeper Alliance (Soundkeeper), an environmental advocacy organization dedicated to protecting and preserving Puget Sound, seeks a dynamic, experienced professional to lead the organization’s established foundation of revenue-generating activities including donor cultivation, corporate partnerships, foundation grants and events.
Organizational Overview: Soundkeeper’s mission is to protect and preserve Puget Sound by stopping the discharge of toxic pollution. Soundkeeper actively monitors Puget Sound water quality by boat, enforces the Clean Water Act, engages with stakeholders and regulators, and implements solution oriented partnerships with the business community, residents and boaters. Soundkeeper is a recognized leader in stormwater pollution regulation, Clean Water Act enforcement and pollution prevention programs like EnviroStars and Clean Marina. Soundkeeper is a founding member of the international Waterkeeper Alliance, now 200 members strong. The Soundkeeper office is a highly collaborative and team-oriented environment. Responsibilities: The Development Director is a member of Soundkeeper’s management team who works with the organizational leadership and Board of Directors to ensure that annual budgetobjectives, currently $600K, are met or exceeded. S(he) is responsible for overseeing development staff, setting goals and implementing a comprehensive development program designed to secure the financial resources to support program activities and enhance Soundkeeper’s reputation. The Development Director reports to the Executive Director/Puget Soundkeeper (ED) and is the staff liaison to the Development Committee. The Development 

Director is responsible for the following tasks:
Management
• Establish annual fundraising goals and ensure they are met or exceeded
• Set the goals and work plan for the Development Committee
• Perform general management tasks, including creation and implementation of annual
development plans, budgets, reports, and evaluations
• Monitor and report on progress of the development plan at monthly Board meetings and on an as-needed basis throughout the year
• Supervise development staff and volunteers
Major Donor Prospects and Corporate Partnerships
• Maintain a proactive, creative leadership role in researching, identifying, cultivating, soliciting
and stewarding major gifts prospects
• Prepare materials needed for effective cultivation and solicitation of prospects
• Oversee the tracking of donor gifts and acknowledgements
• Stay abreast of current events and philanthropic trends that may impact programs
• Develop a comprehensive online donor strategy using social media avenues
• Manage corporate and small business partnerships
• Track and strategically coordinate the support of all Board members
Grant Writing
• Research and evaluate foundation, corporate and government grant opportunities
• Work with the ED and program staff to meet grant deadlines
Brand Identity and Networking
• Work with staff and board to ensure strong external communications across all program areas to strengthen Soundkeeper’s brand overall effectiveness
• Represent Soundkeeper at public events, conferences and media events along with the ED
• Manage the quarterly publication of the newsletter
• Work with the ED to review and approve all written materials supporting development
activities
Events
• Oversee all events with attention to revenue generation while controlling expenses
• Develop and manage the marketing strategy for events
• Oversee the Development Coordinator’s event planning tasks
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
• Minimum four years experience, or advanced degree and two years of experience, in nonprofit
development with a proven track record of successful fundraising
• Two years of management experience
• Demonstrated success in working as a member of a collaborative team and developing effective working relationships with staff, volunteers and donors
• Ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
• Ability to work unsupervised, solve problems independently, effectively and creatively, and
make decisions with the organization’s well-being as the primary concern
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to motivate and inspire staff and stakeholders
• Computer literacy and competency with basic computer applications
• Comfortable speaking to large and small groups
• Experience with database programs, i.e. Donor Perfect, is preferred
• Experience with broadcast mass email programs, i.e. Vertical Response, is preferred
• Strong business orientation preferred
• An activist heart with concern for environmental issues and solutions is a must!
Location
Seattle, Washington
Hours-
40+ hours/week. Must be flexible to work weekends and longer hours when needed; this is a full-time, exempt position.
Compensation-
Competitive nonprofit salary with benefits; based on experience.
