United States -- North Atlantic

The U.S. North Atlantic region encompasses Waterkeeper organizations from Maine to Virginia whose waterways drain to the Atlantic Ocean. The region includes bountiful freshwater and saltwater resources.

Major Victories:

  • 8,400 acres in the heart of the New Jersey Meadowlands will remain natural wetlands because of New York/New Jersey Baykeeper and Hackensack Riverkeeper’s successful fight against developers;
  • A state law requiring car wreckers to remove mercury switches from automobiles that was first passed through the work of Waterkeeper organizations in New Jersey has now been successfully replicated in five other states;
  • A lawsuit brought by Casco Baykeeper, Delaware Riverkeeper, Hackensack Riverkeeper, Hudson Riverkeeper, Lake Champlain Waterkeeper, Narragansett Baykeeper, New York/New Jersey Baykeeper, Waterkeeper Alliance and four Pacific Waterkeeper organizations will force more than 1,000 power plants and industrial facilities around the nation to upgrade antiquated cooling technology and stop the killing of billions of fish each year;
  • Collaboration throughout the region on policy, enforcement and innovative design solutions, including low impact development, to address stormwater and combined sewer overflows.
